Faux Finish and Trompe l’oeil Murals.

Frottage –  When you place a pieces of paper on a rough surface and then rub with a pencil or wax crayon it creates a frottage. The word frottage is a French word that means “to rub”. As a faux finish technique, a combination of paint and glaze is applied to the wall and then crunched up thin plastic, film or newspaper is pressed into the glazed paint. When peeled off a unique texture and irregular pattern are revealed in the paint resembling a frottage.   The patterns vary and are random.

Wall Crawl – This technique is also called the Tissue Paper texture. This is a great way to disguise a less-than-perfect wall. It can also be applied over existing wallpaper.  A base coat of paint is applied to the wall and the sheet tissue (gift wrapping kind) is manipulated to create an interesting texture.  The paint acts as an adhesive to glue the tissue to the wall. Wallpaper paste can be used to attach the tissue paper to the wall surface. Another layer or two of paint is applied to finish the technique.

Some other finishes are Marbling, Crackling, Damask, Linen, Leather, Stone, Wood, Sponging, Dragging, Washing, and Combing (sgraffito).
